Atex Ex II 3D extraction system in Turin
GGE recently installed an extraction system in Turin (Italy), at the Italian plant of a major multinational company.
The customer contacted us to design a system that would extract the dust generated in their production process: this dust is harmful if breathed in by operators and must therefore be conveyed into an extraction system.
This system realised for the Turin site is Atex Ex II 3D certified and it’s therefore compliant to be installed in zone 22 according to the Atex Directive 2014/34/EU.
Operation of the extraction system in Turin
Dust extraction on the machines takes place through specially dimensioned air inlets, capable of extracting the dusty air flow and preventing it from being dispersed into the working environment.
The system generates suction through the action of a 37 kW DT centrifugal fan mod. DTV1004 Atex Ex II 3D certified, placed outside the building in a soundproofing box.
The extracted air, loaded with dust, goes through the pipes and reaches the filter unit of the Atex Ex II 3D extraction system, which consists of a cyclone and a Power Jet cartridge filter.
First, the air flow enters the cyclonic separator mod. CICL15/NGA: here the air enters tangentially and, due to the centrifugal effect, the coarser dust particles in suspension lose kinetic energy and fall downwards.
The air flow then reaches the Power Jet filter unit mod. PJ121/C16/3/6: the 16 high-efficiency antistatic cartridges retain even the finest residual dust and the air that comes out can be released into the atmosphere.
The discharge of the collected dust, both in the cyclone and in the Power Jet, is done by means of a motorised rotary valve at the end of the hopper, which allows continuous discharge of the dust and prevents the material from settling and clogging the filters.
The dust is collected inside two Big Bags, which are attached to the structures of the cyclone and the Power Jet within an area enclosed by anti-intrusion nets and gates with security microswitches.
Automated system management
The start-up and shutdown of the Atex Ex II 3D extraction system can be managed locally by the operators, using the buttons on the control panel or via the touch screen panel, or remotely from company PCs.
In addition, the HMI panel on the cabinet allows monitoring of the system’s operation and signalling of any alarms, and it gives the possibility to modify the operating parameters.
Atex conformity and safety devices
Given the type of dust generated by the company’s processes, we designed the extraction system in Atex Ex II 3D execution: this means that, as well as being equipped with additional safety systems, it is made of materials suitable for operating in an area classified as potentially explosive.
- Along the pipeline, near the filter unit, we have placed an isolation valve, which closes by gravity in the event of an explosion in the filter unit. In this way, the internal pipes are isolated from the rest of the plant and the explosion cannot reach the operators.
- Both the cyclone and the Power Jet filter are equipped with two explosion-proof panels: these ensure that any explosion is propagated in a well-defined direction.
