Atex Ex II 3D system for metal dust extraction
This Atex Ex II 3D dust extraction system was designed for a company in Modena specializing in high-precision mechanical processing. Since metal dust is generated during production, and considering the risk of sparks, an ATEX Ex II 3D solution was implemented to safely treat air in potentially explosive atmospheres.
The primary aim of the intervention is to ensure effective dust extraction directly at workstations, reducing dispersion into the environment and increasing the safety level of the plant. The design was geared towards controlled dust management, both in terms of filtration and explosion risk prevention.
System configuration
Metal dust is captured at workbenches and workstations via dedicated heat-resistant and self-extinguishing flexible hoses. The extracted dust is conveyed to our Finpol unit with cylindrical construction, in Atex Ex II 3D version. Inside, 4 antistatic cartridges filter the air, supported by an automatic compressed air cleaning system.
The dust-laden air is drawn by an Atex-compliant DT centrifugal fan, housed within a soundproof box.
Meanwhile, the purified air is discharged into the atmosphere through a Ø 350 mm exhaust stack, equipped with a silencer and a windproof terminal.
To inertize the extracted dust and prevent premature cartridge clogging, we integrated a lime dosing system. Managed by an electrical panel that dictates its operating and pause times, the device releases lime into the ductwork, which stabilizes the dust, reduces its explosivity, and extends filter life.
Atex certification of the extraction system
Building Atex-compliant extraction systems requires specialized safety devices to ensure electrical continuity and protection against fire or explosion risks.
- We installed an explosion-proof panel with a total venting surface area of 0.5 m² and a flooding system with a temperature probe and dedicated control unit on the Finpol filter unit, which activates if the temperature inside the filter becomes too high.
- We have installed a non-return valve along the pipe connecting the inside of the building and the Finpol filter (located outside the company premises). This valve is designed to close in the event of an explosion inside the filter. This prevents the explosion from spreading inside the building, confining it to the filter unit alone.
All pipes and components of the system are connected by copper jumpers, which ensure equipotential bonding and grounding.
Experts in Atex Systems Design
Metal powders, as well as flours, powders from chemical processes, or solvents, may require an Atex-certified extraction system. Therefore, proper design must take into account the characteristics of the pollutant and operating conditions, integrating appropriate filtering systems and safety devices.
Thanks to our extensive experience in the field of industrial dust extraction, we are able to provide in-depth consulting and assessment services for the design of Atex filtration systems. Please do not hesitate to contact us, our technicians are at your disposal.
