Five welding fume extraction plants in Umbria

GGE srl had the opportunity to design and manufacture five welding fume extraction systems for the Italian detachment based in Spoleto (Perugia) of an European leading company in the production of industrial trailers. The extraction systems were built in compliance with Industry 4.0 standards, including software for remote management of efficiency parameters.

The systems installed extract the fumes produced by welding operations along 9 working lines, where the fumes are captured by means of 140 articulated suction arms, each 3 m long and equipped with a Ø 150 mm hood.

Each extraction system is equipped with a 55 kW centrifugal fan with an air flow of 40,000 m³/h which, when activated, generates the necessary negative pressure to activate the suction from the arms.
The air thus extracted, laden with welding fumes, is conveyed into the Power Jet filter unit, with 32 anti-static cartridges and a total filtering surface of 1,312 m²: pollutant particles from the fumes remain attached to the cartridge fabric, while clean air is expelled into the atmosphere via a Ø 1250 mm exhaust chimney. All five chimneys are equipped with flow uniformers and three silencers, which attenuate the noise of the turbulence generated by the outgoing airflow.

On board each Power Jet dust collector there are two explosion-proof panels, safety devices that guarantee less propagation of flame, pressure or heat in the event of an explosion, and a flooding system with bypass, which is activated in the event of a dust collector fire: if the temperature probe inserted in the filter detects a temperature above the maximum set threshold, a water solenoid valve opens and allows the dust collector to be flooded by means of a sprinkler.

The start-up and shutdown of the five welding fume extraction plants in Umbria are managed by respective control panels equipped with inverters, HMI panel, PLC and software for the transmission of operating data and alarms via Modbus protocol.
